On the road once again: The Girotonno
In the picturesque setting of the small town of Carloforte, a renowned Italian tourist destination situated on the island of St. Peter in the South West of Sardinia from 2nd to 5th of June 2011, returns the ninth edition of The Girotonno “men, stories and flavours based on the routes of tuna” - an international food and wine festival which celebrates the tradition tied to tuna fishing, through cultural activities and entertainment.
The entire event revolves around the ritual steeped in tradition of tuna fishing which takes place every year in the Sulcis Iglesiente region between the months of May and June where it is still one the oldest tuna traps of the Mediterranean Sea. This evocative ritual of fishing lasts 45 days, less violent than in the past to which tourists can watch from special boats designed by the Tonnara.
The focus of the festival are the International Gastronomic Competions in which chefs compete in a culinary competion focused on the creation of a dish consisting of “Tunnus tynnus”, the most expensive and high quality tuna also know as blue fin tuna.
Chefs from Korea, Brazil, Mexico & Italy selected as the last edition,from
ICIF-Itaian Culinary Institute for Foreigners, will compete in the kitchen, producing a specialty with the blue fin tuna, and also
using a basket of Sardinian products. The competitors must choose two of the sardinian ingredients merged with the tuna.

To declare a winner, a panel of 10 judges, chaired by food & wine journalist Angelo Concas, Regional Secretary of Arga Sardinia and National President of EPULAE Academy will decide through judication.
The jury, formed by chefs,journalists and industry experts,will award the winner with the traditional ceramic dish with the Girotonno tuna depicted.
New this year is that the chefs competitors will be judged by a panel of guests who will enjoy their creation in dinner parties.The inclusion of the diners as jury is followed by the institution of a new prize "Bilancella" a faithfull reproduction of the traditonal wooden sailing boat Carlofortina.

The ninth edition of The Girotonno will present again a spectacular full of fun and good taste.
It is with great satisfaction for those who have organised and created the event this year which will certainly be worthy of the reputation of previous editions.
There are several new innovations this year which will characterise the event apart from the previous editions.

A Brazilian chef win the ninth edition of the GIROTONNO

The winner of the ninth edition of Girotonno 2011 is a Brazilian chef. Pier Paolo Picchi, that at the competition has cooked a gourmet tuna belly on a bed of hearts of palm, was the most voted by the jury and guests. His dish was in fact judged as "elegant, the one with greater imagination and also the most balanced flavors: a perfect harmony between the tuna, typical of the Mediterranean, and the South American flavours and aromas. " In short, a dish that has combined two cultures respecting the characteristics of the tuna.

As prize he will receive the traditional dish in ceramic created for the 2011 edition, depicting the stylized image of a tuna. Pier Paolo Picchi he will received as well the prize "bilancella" (a miniature sail boat used to transport the minerals from the Sulcis to the San Pietro island) given for the first time by diners. The second place is been given to the Mexican chef (Abdiel Cervantes Escalona), the third Italian (Mariuccia Roggero iron) and fourth Korean (Eun Kiong Kim). Same ranking by the diners the only difference being the former fair given the last two winners. The awards will be presented during the gala dinner scheduled for tonight at the Museo del mare (The sea Museum).
